Picerne Family Foundation To Resume Global Sustainability Project
The Global Sustainability Project (GSP) gives California high school students the opportunity to actively engage in ecological sustainability, both locally and internationally.
With the post-covid resumption of international travel, the Picerne Foundation is continuing the Global Sustainability Program. Dolores Dang-Wright, a teacher at Dana Hills High School, and Greg Gardiner at Edison High School have been selected to lead 10 junior year students from each of their schools on a 12 day research expedition to South Africa during the summer, 2024. Prior to the trip, each student will volunteer for 40 hours in a university research or conservation project in their communities.
The Picerne Family Foundation created The Global Sustainability Project to provide high school students the opportunity to perform meaningful service in support of their community’s environment and to do intensive international environmental field research. The Foundation awards full scholarships to ten students, a teacher and a scientist from each school to participate in a research expedition to South Africa’s Mankwe Wildlife Reserve. Students participating in the South Africa expedition will aid research scientists studying ecological sustainability among Africa’s wildlife, particularly endangered rhinos.
Begun in 2012, the Foundation has sponsored 188 students and 34 teachers and scientists from 19 southern California high schools to attend research expeditions in Africa and the Peruvian Amazon. Students have contributed a total of 21,352 hours of volunteer environmental research in their communities.
